Daruma Ramen

Project Overview

Daruma Ramen, a popular ramen restaurant based in Auckland, partnered with Phosphor to develop a complete self-service ordering solution for their new location at Commercial Bay.
The goal was to modernize the ordering experience, streamline operations, and make the most of the limited counter space — without sacrificing Daruma’s signature quality and hospitality.

The Challenge

Daruma Ramen faced several operational challenges as they expanded into one of Auckland’s busiest dining areas:

  • Long queues during peak hours due to manual ordering and payment processes.
  • Order accuracy issues in a fast-paced kitchen environment.
  • Limited counter space, which needed to be optimized for food production and service.
  • A desire to engage customers and promote menu items visually using digital signage.

The Solution

Phosphor and Daruma Ramen collaborated to create a comprehensive self-service kiosk system integrated with both a Kitchen Display System (KDS) and digital signage, combining form and function to enhance the entire in-store experience.

1. Self-Service Kiosks (POS)

I helped design and build the frontend kiosk interface, which allowed customers to browse the menu, customize their ramen, and make secure payments — all through an intuitive touchscreen UI.

Key Features:

  • Touch-optimized, fully responsive layout built with JavaScript and Bootstrap.
  • Real-time menu browsing with images and descriptions.
  • Dietary preference customization options.
  • Support for multiple payment methods, including credit cards and mobile wallets.
  • Seamless communication with backend systems for real-time order tracking.

2. Kitchen Display System (KDS)

To improve efficiency and order accuracy, the KDS was implemented to synchronize directly with the kiosks.
Incoming orders appeared in real time on kitchen screens, allowing staff to prioritize and prepare dishes quickly and accurately.

Highlights:

  • Instant order transmission between kiosks and kitchen.
  • Order prioritization based on preparation times.
  • Real-time order status updates for both staff and customers.

3. Digital Signage & Advertisements

I also worked on creating dynamic digital advertisements displayed above the restaurant.
These promotional screens were designed to attract customers, display offers, and keep diners engaged while they waited.

Features:

  • Integrated digital signage connected to the POS and KDS systems.
  • Animated promotional loops and menu showcases built from Figma/PSD assets.
  • Dynamic content updates for promotions, menu highlights, and seasonal specials.

The Result

The implementation of the Phosphor self-service kiosk system at Daruma Ramen has transformed the restaurant’s in-store experience:

  • Reduced Queues: Ordering and payments are faster and more efficient.
  • Improved Accuracy: The KDS ensures every order reaches the kitchen exactly as intended.
  • Enhanced Engagement: The digital signage and promotional screens keep customers informed and entertained.
  • Optimized Space: By eliminating large POS counters, more room was made for preparation and customer seating.

Daruma Ramen’s investment in this digital transformation positioned them as a forward-thinking, tech-friendly restaurant in Auckland’s competitive dining scene.
It’s a prime example of how smart technology can elevate the dining experience while improving operational efficiency.
